As Mauville Gym Leader Josh Devlin is giving you a mounted guided tour of the Racing Grounds, your Pokémon mount rears in fright as a deafening thundercrack pounds at your ears. Strangely enough, there is no accompanying flash of lightning nearby.[break][break]

"No way... no way!!" you barely hear the Gym Leader cry through somewhat deafened ears. Looking around and up, while most of the sky is clear, you see a purple, billowy, ominous-looking cloud visibly expanding in the distance.[break][break]

Without a word from Josh, you guide your Pokémon mount away from the Gym's concourse and spur them in the direction of the expanding cloud. As you enter the storm cloud's shadow, you can feel its downdraft upon you and see your mount's fur visibly blown about in the wind from above.[break][break]

To the east of the racing grounds, where you saw the cloud originate from (and knowledge of weather patterns would tell you storm clouds coming in from the east is highly unusual), you can see a medium-size circle of completely charred grass surrounded by fire. At its center is a small but fairly deep depression. East of the fire are footprints of a Pokémon you've never seen before. They are very feline, but you've never seen a feline Pokémon with a single-pointed claw before. The distance between footprints is staggering, an indication that whatever made them can move incredibly fast.[break][break]

You briefly turn your head back to see that Josh is charging toward you at full speed on his Manectric, frantically trying to catch up to you.[break][break]

While using your water Pokémon to put out the fire works, It was an electrical fire, making water far less effective in dousing the flames. After doing so, you see five depressions in the ground. Four of them are shaped like feline pawprints with a single protrusion at the end of them, as if the creature had single-pointed claws. The fifth is a small crater, the grass around it completely blackened, unlike the grass that was burning previously.[break][break]

Your experience with many varieties of Pokémon leads you to believe that this crater came about as the result of a THUNDER attack of divine strength. You have never seen an electric attack create a crater of this size.[break][break]

Your close pursuit lets you catch a brief glimpse of a feline figure whose red eyes seem to stare into your very soul. A grey, crown-like faceplate covers the figure's head, and beyond it, you can see a purple cloud hovering behind it, not unlike the one covering every square inch of the sky for miles in every direction. The creature opens its fanged maw, and a roar indistinguishable from thunder washes over you. Behind you, you see Josh and his Manectric preparing to enter a QUICK ATTACK chain. Quick thinking leads him to grab Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki ’s cooling pad, putting it under his phone to keep it from exploding or shutting off.[break][break]
Josh is rushing to attack him. Head-long, with a quick attack. The master of faster is coming at him guns blazing.[break][break]

Your actions take even the Johto Beast by surprise, the combination of SMOKESCREEN and SUBSTITUTE altering the trajectory of Josh and his Manectric. Their QUICK ATTACK turns from a tool of speed to keep up with Raikou into a tool to harm the god of speed. His red eyes glow, his demeanor shifting to the anger of a thunderstorm.[break][break]

Raikou briefly shifts his eyes toward you before calling down a line of lightning bolts, which Josh is going far too fast to react to. While the divine current runs through him and his Pokémon for only a split second, even his electric mount lets out a pained cry as it is struck, resistance to electric attacks meaningless in the Beast's presence. It appears that Josh has lost control of his senses as the maelstrom afflicts his exposed skin with electrical burns. Despite the Beast's disposition, Josh is bound and determined to keep his dream alive. He and his Manectric zoom toward Route 119 in hot pursuit.[break][break]

At the speed needed to keep up the chase, the trees and wildlife are little more than a blur. What isn't a blur, though, is a narrow valley that you see Raikou effortlessly leap over. With a QUICK ATTACK from your Pokémon, you could probably make it, too, but the leap wouldn't be for the faint of heart! Alternatively, you could go down and up the valley, or look for a narrower point to cross to make the leap easier![break][break]

Chewing on the end of a cigar, he nodded at that response. It’s back on track. No longer glitching. They’re back on script – somewhat. Like reality was setting itself right. What had been happening moments before? He couldn’t say, not at all.[break][break]
All he knew is that another stress test was in order. This prompt was simple. His first thought was to type ‘summon Skarmory to fly across and overtake Josh’. That would be simple enough.[break][break]
The snag was he kept assuming he had to have the Pokemon. All of the ones he had used thus far were Pokemon he himself owned. What if…[break][break]

Suicune’s a no-go. That, more than anything, serves as a confirmation that what he’s seeing is a version of something that has actually transpired, somewhere and somewhen. A purely AI generated game would have simply taken his command as gospel. Suicune would forge for him a path.[break][break]

Your Pelipper blows Josh and his Manectric back at the perfect time. With him having little time to react, you hear a scream followed by the cry of a Kilowattrel. The electric bird carries him to the same side of the ravine you are standing on. He is bleeding in multiple locations, red ooze dripping down his cheeks. As he gets back on his Manectric, the blue and yellow wolf respects his wounds, taking much of the rest of the route to Fortree at a far slower pace than normal.[break][break]

After a lengthy chase, you catch up to Raikou at a small shrine on Route 119, not too far west of Fortree City. The Beast looks well-rested, basking in the vicious storm's downdrafts. They are so intense that you imagine flying on a Pokémon now would be next to impossible. The sitting Pokémon eyes the two of you warily as lightning strikes all around you. Despite Josh's bleeding wounds, you can catch the glint of a presumably empty Poké Ball in his hand, his eyes shifting back and forth between Raikou and Fortree proper. He is clearly contemplating retreat.[break][break]
